Mold check and cleanup

Mold grows within 24 to 48 hours of a leak. Rainy months and coastal humidity make bathrooms, closets, crawlspaces and window sills the hot spots.

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Find and fix the water source first. Mold always follows moisture.
  2. Wear a respirator, gloves and goggles.
  3. Clean hard surfaces with mold remover. Do not mix bleach and ammonia.
  4. Bag and remove moldy drywall, carpet and insulation.
  5. Dry the area and keep humidity below 50 percent.
  6. Prime with mold-resistant primer before repainting.
When to call a pro: More than 10 sq ft (about 3 x 3 ft), HVAC ducts, or anyone in the home with asthma or a weak immune system: hire a mold remediation company. Landlords must address mold under California law.
