Re-caulk the tub and shower

Cracked caulk lets water behind the tile and into the subfloor. That is how small leaks turn into mold and rot.

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Cut and scrape out all old caulk.
  2. Clean with mildew remover, rinse and let dry 24 hours.
  3. Tape both sides of the joint.
  4. Run a steady bead, smooth with a wet finger, pull the tape right away.
  5. Do not use the shower for 24 hours.
When to call a pro: Soft drywall or loose tile around the tub means water is already behind it: get a contractor to open the wall.
